Trailers of the Week: Reptile, Dream Scenario, More
While I dedicate a significant amount of my time to reviewing stuff that has already hit the screens – be it classic films, vintage TV shows, or recently-released series – there's a special place in my heart for the anticipation that trailers bring.
Sometimes, I find myself equally enthralled by the trailers as I am by the actual show or movie they tease.
This endeavor allows me to capture that fleeting moment in time just before the movie or show is released, when excitement is at its peak, and the possibilities seem endless. It's a unique sensation that vanishes once the initial viewing begins. There have been instances where I've been utterly hyped by a trailer, only to be disappointed by the final product, but my appreciation for well-crafted trailer endures.
Update 10/31/2023 - I reviewed Killers of the Flower Moon here: The Sense of Dread in Killers of the Flower Moon. I also watched Reptile and it was a really solid flick. I’m still excited about the other movies on this list. They are among my most anticipated, and in a time where I have very little space on my schedule to see movies in theatres, it may take a while for me to see some of these unless they are released on streaming. I had to block out 4 hours to see Killers of the Flower Moon but I would definitely say it was worth it. I want to watch it again. Reptile was solid but I didn’t find it as memorable or anything that I wanted to say about it in a review, but maybe in the future I’ll revisit it. It’s probably in the high 6, to 8 range in a rating out of ten for me. I highly recommend both.
Without further ado, I present the inaugural edition of 'Trailers of the Week'...
Reptile
Looks dope, looks dark. I love the cast. It features Benicio and Justin Timberlake, whom I enjoy in movies. This gives off a bit of 'True Detective' vibes. Alicia Silverstone was in 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer,' and I feel like she could be in for a revival. I'd like to see it because she seems pretty cool.
Corner Office
It looks weird style. The premise is so weird, and it appears that the perspectives will be interesting. Johnny Hamm seems to portray a delusional mentally ill character in it, or maybe not. His line delivery, just from the trailer, is dope. I bet its hilarious. 'Didn't I tell you it was pointless to try and engage in psychological warfare with me?' It seems like it could explore contemporary workforce themes and meanings, giving off Severance vibes. Also, Office Space vibes.
Dream Scenario
Another very weird premise, but it's super original. There are numerous ways it could take in terms of tone. It appears quite lighthearted, yet being an A24 movie, it's likely to feature some of the crazy things Nicholas Cage does in dreams. He seems like a perfect casting choice for the role because he’s nuts, but he also seems to be portraying a nice, normal guy. That will be refreshing to see him like that. I'm definitely planning to watch it and probably review it. It might become one of those highly popular movies once it starts hitting the screens.
The Sympathizer
I just feel like Robert Downey Jr. has impeccable taste. He’s one of my favorite actors (I’m just realizing that). This looks dope because it will feature new faces and the story seems crazy af.
Poor Things
Frankenstein vibes. I sense a strong feminist undertone, but of the best and most captivating kind – the kind that's authentically subtle and woven into the story. The trailer stands out as the most peculiar among them all. It's eerie, yet its music is uplifting and uniquely enthralling. This might be my most anticipated trailer, well, perhaps second most. Yorgos is undeniably one of the most uncompromising directors out there. If you've seen 'Killing of a Sacred Deer' or 'The Lobster,' you understand that he doesn't yield an inch of his artistic vision. The narratives emerge unadulterated, yet they leave a lasting mark on your psyche. At times, they can be challenging to watch, but they age like fine wine in your mind once you've experienced them in their entirety.
Killers of the Flower Moon
This is my most highly anticipated movie of the year, ranking as number one. It's expected to have a runtime of over three hours, but I never mind that. I don't understand why people complain about it. It might mean waiting a bit longer to watch, but I won't complain about getting three or more hours of Martin Scorsese crafting art with a camera. I mean, how much can we take for granted? How spoiled have we become? Anyways, there is another trailer for this movie, but the line featured in this one is the reason I chose this version. 'Can you find the wolves in this picture?' The line and its use in this trailer is iconic stuff.
